Best 3 beaches from South Menorca

Cala Macarella

The famous Cala Macarella, has become one of the most popular beaches during summer time, due to its good facilities and a nearby parking place. Not to mention, the white, fine, sandy beach, with a unique “U” form of about 140 meters large. It is surrounded by cliffs covered with Pine-trees and we cannot ignore the intense color of its waters.
The story tells us that it was a former refuge for smugglers and pirates that wanted to hide their cargo near the coast, inside a cave located on the beach. On the past couple of years, Cala Macarella has become one of the most visited beaches by the tourist and along with it little sister, Cala Macarelleta, 5 minutes distance on foot, offer one of the best options to get to know the island and enjoy from a sunny beach day.

How to arrive

Cala Macarella is located on the south of the island, 17 km away approximately from Ciutadella. Driving from Ciutadella, you must take the turn on the road “Camí de Sant Joan de Missa” and follow up the directions until the parking place is aside. The car trip should take 20 minutes approximately.
On the beach, you will find a beach-bar with snacks, but be careful because it is usually overcrowded on high season and if you do not want to wait on a line, a little piece of advice for you: bring your own food and just buy your cold drinks there.

Cala en Turqueta

Cala en Turqueta is other famous beach located on the south of Menorca, 10 km away from Ciutadella. It is a small beach with fine sandy beach and deep turquoise waters, surrounded by pine trees and separated in 2 by a line of pine trees. Its name is due the crystal clear turquoise color of its water.
Thanks to its location and south position and its singular shape of “W”, the sun usually hides a little bit earlier than in other region, and on his way down, leaves plenty of shady zones to rest and relax, while most of the visitors are almost gone and the beach stars looking peaceful, quiet and empty. This is one of the best Sunset of all times, it is just like looking into a postcard from a magazine, only much better.

How to arrive

To get to Cala en Turqueta driving from Ciutadella, take the Camí de Sant Joan de Missa and follow the directions and signs until you will find a parking place, which is 10 minutes on foot away from the beach. Here you will also find a beach bar for sandwiches and snacks and the restrooms. Remember that during summer you might find the parking place full, so let me give you a piece of advice: the sooner you get, the better for you. 
One of most recent problems of Cala Turqueta is the limited space and the increasing number of visitors arriving every summer, especially since the Mini-cruises starting to operate from Ciutadella and landing on the beach at noon with dozens of visitors at the same time. So again, the key to avoid crowds is to arrive early in the mornings or late on the evenings.

Cala Mitjana

Cala Mitjada is the 3rd chosen favorite beach from the south of the island. Located near to Cala Galdana, which give us access to a bunch of small beaches not so famous, such as Cala Trebaluger, Cala Fustam o Cala Escorxada.

Two things to point out about Cala Mitjada is that it is rich in sand and have a big bathing area. Thanks to that, you will always find a spot to lay down with your towel even when the beach is full. Due to its south position, the sun hides one hour earlier than the usual so the surrounded pine trees, start covering the beach with shadows.
You can visit its little sister known Cala Mitjaneta, it is a very small cousy beach with little sand and little space, located just next to Cala Mitjana.

How to arrive

From Maó o Ciutadella, take the direction toward Cala Galdana, follow the signs and take the left exit just before to arrive there. It is not difficult to get there by car and during summer time, you will immediately spot cars parked on both side of the road. However you will find a free parking area is located 10 minutes on foot from the beach.

If you are thinking about spending your next holiday vacation on Menorca, visiting Cala Macarella or Cala en Turqueta or Cala Mitjana, we recommend you to book a room on  Valentin Son Bou Hotel & Apts o Valentin Star Hotel.
