If you choose five towns on
Gran Canaria at random – Arucas, Agaete, Mogán, Agüimes and Teror – you can find that the island is a miniature continent. It ranges from farming and fishing to tourism, from humble cottages to mansions, and from breathtaking cliff roads to modern highways. In an area of less than 1,600 square kilometres it is incredible to find such
climatic, biological and cultural diversity.
Gran Canaria is an island, but it has all the variety of a continent.
The
Arucas village devoted to agriculture, particularly banana plantations, is blessed with one of the island´s most important water supplies and has always had a spectacular economic development. Today the excellent rum named after the village is produced there. The village also preserved traditional arquaeological remains such as the “
Salterns of Bañaderos” and it is covered by a blue stone. This stone not only gives the houses but also the streets, the parks and the boulevards a unique charm. It also has spectacular buildings which have a vivid blueish-grey colour thanks to a volvanic rock that is composed of feldspar and aluminosilicate (phonolite).
In
Agaete you can fall in love with the village which is open to the sea, of whitewashed houses, the frames of their doors and windows painted in bright colours. Not only artists and bohemians enjoy the ambiance but also those who like the gastronomy related to the sea: parrotfish, comber, octopus, limpets and pandora fish. The sea impresses with its food and with its considerable character. The volcanic cliffs together with the sea bed of a stone that makes it exceptionally dark, give it an almost inescapable halo of mystery. Inland, the village has a beautiful valley that produces all kinds of fruit and vegetables.
Another coastal town is
Mogán which became an important tourist centre, even so a large area is still reserved for its traditional fishing activities. In the inland areas agriculture dominates but several kilometres away from the centre you can find the port of Mogán. It is divided in an imitation of a fishing village and the yachting marina that has become a world-famous
deep-sea fishing centre. The port is also starting point of boat trips along the coast. The climate and the surroundings of Mogán led to a very special botanical interest.
The beauty of the cultural and architectural wealth of the village
Agüimes comes from the fact that its people preserved and recovered its identity in its houses and public places. Agüimes has repainted its dwellings in ochre colours, humble they may be, but in a rural style few villages can demonstrate. Rural tourism might be said to be have been invented in this village offering the best it has: the products of its land and the beauty of its surroundings.
Water is one of the most important sources of wealth of the costal village
Teror which has a spring that provides some of the most sought-after mineral water on the island. Teror has a very varied climate, in winter the thermometers can plunge to less than 10 degrees, whereas in summer the daytime temperature remains stable at 23 to 28 degress. Teror used to be a summer holiday destination for the well-to-do families of the island. Its church contains the affigy of the Virgin of the Pine, the patroness of Gran Canaria. The village has a very
special architecture. Not only was stone used in the construction of many dwellings, but they were also given large wooden balconies which produce a pleasently welcoming sensation. Because of the rain, nearly all the roofs are covered with tiles, and the principal colour of the houses continues to be white.
